GMC Approves RCEM’s Training Curriculum updates

Thursday 24 July 2025

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine is pleased to announced that the General Medical Council (GMC) has formally approved the proposed revisions to the College’s training curriculum.

It comes after the College worked with the GMC on proposed updates to the 2021 Curriculum.

These updates have now been ratified and will officially come into effect on Wednesday 6 August 2025.

The changes were requested in response to feedback from, and in consultation with, key stakeholders including resident doctors in training and their supervisors and are fully supported by the College’s Trainee Association – EMTA.

The proposed changes consist of corrections, updates and re-arrangements, plus some broadening of options within the Programmes of Learning and Assessment and changes in emphasis on certain elements.

The underlying clinical syllabus and overall curriculum structure remain, unaltered as does the structure of training in Emergency Medicine.

These revisions reflect the College’s ongoing commitment to upholding the highest standards of Emergency Medicine training. They are designed to bring greater clarity to curriculum expectations and to give trainees the opportunity to include a broader and more flexible range of evidence in their portfolios—ensuring the curriculum remains both rigorous and responsive to real-world clinical practice.

A detailed summary of the curriculum changes is now available.

For trainees transitioning between old and new frameworks, a comprehensive Transition Arrangements guide is also available.

Over the coming weeks, the College will be:

  • Contacting resident doctors with specific information about the changes
  • Embedding the curriculum updates into the ePortfolio
  • Providing guidance on how to interact with the new content in ePortfolio
  • Updating the RCEM Curriculum website, with additional guidance

We remain committed to supporting trainees and trainers through this transition, and to ensuring the updated curriculum continues to deliver excellence in Emergency Medicine training.
